The Amerindians The East Indians
The Africans The Portuguese
The Chinese Mixed Races

The Amerindians. These are our indigenous people, the original settlers of this land. However ,over the years many of the tribes that long ago existed have become extinct as a result of raids , warfare , and disease. Most of the Amerindian population still remain in the interior, some of them still practicing the old way of life.

The Africans The Africans came to this country as slaves to work mostly on the sugar plantations. These were tough times as the conditions were inhuman and the work hours long and exhausting. As a result they were many revolts and runaways. In 1838 slavery was abolished and the Africans set free.

The Chinese The Chinese came to Guyana after slavery was abolished to work as indentured laborers on the plantations. Many choose to remain after their contracts had expired.

The East Indians The East Indians came to Guyana as Indentured Laborers. During the period of 1838 to 1917 , almost 250,000 East Indians were brought from India. Many of them choose to remain after their contracts were up. Today the Indians make of more then half of the Guyanese population.

The Portuguese The Portuguese also came to Guyana as laborers. They also decided to stay on after their contracts were up.

Mixed Races Through the inter-racial marriages of several our five races we also have a mixture of various ethnicity in our society.
